Experiments with the model version of the AIDA simulation chamber.

Under the motto "Atmospheric Physics: From Weather to Storms", girls from the 5th to 8th grade were able to gain interesting insights into the diverse work of atmospheric researchers at KIT on Girl's Day on April 3, 2025. The workshop was jointly organized and supervised by members of IMKAAF and IMKTRO.

In an exciting opening presentation, the 15 participants learned what weather and climate are, how weather forecasts are made, and why extreme weather events are becoming more common as a result of climate change. Afterwards, they were able to apply what they had learned in a playful way until lunch break. After a virtual tour of the AIDA cloud simulation chamber, the girls were able to use a mini version of AIDA to try out for themselves what "ingredients" are needed to create a cloud. Other interactive experiments helped them understand the greenhouse effect, how thermal convection works, why we see a red sunset, that water and ice can exist simultaneously below 0°C, and what this means for cloud and precipitation formation. At the end of the program, participants could test their knowledge in a meteorological quiz.

Thank you for your participation!
