FWF and DFG approve funding of Austrian - German research project ICEFELD
In the framework of ICEFELD project the cloud microphysics research group at IMK-AAF will be joining forces with scientists at the Institute of Photonic Studies and Synchrotron radiation (KIT-IPS) and Department of Lithography of the University of Vienna, Austria, in an effort to reveal the mechanism of ice nucleation active sites formation in natural feldspars as they undergo chemical and physical transformation from magmatic rocks to airborne aerosol particles. State of the art experimental methods, including environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), synchrotron X-ray scattering techniques, and advanced optical microscopy for material characterization will be complemented by novel atomistic modelling of processes occurring on feldspar-ice interfaces to tackle this challenging task. The ICEFELD project will accommodate three closely interrelated PhD positions established in the respective research group. IMK-AAF invites applications for one PhD student position (https://www.imk-aaf.kit.edu/OpenPositions_1761.php) (f/m) to work on the unique ESEM and synchrotron-based research facilities.
